Once a teacher, always a teacher!

This is a letter to the editor at the Telegram & Gazette that was published on Monday, April 23, 2012.

Claremont teachers unfairly targeted

I was shocked and saddened by the actions of School Superintendent Melinda Boone at Claremont Academy. Once again, the teachers are the bad guys when in fact it is a combination of many factors. Teachers everywhere have become the scapegoats for society’s ills.

I am a retired teacher, and I know if I were a new teacher I would have sought the door out quickly. Statistics prove this to be true. Teaching to a test (MCAS) is the nuttiest thing that has come down the pike. Can you imagine being a student and having to hear this everyday?

I know the collaborative group is well meaning but they are not educators. Why is it that everyone who went to school considers themselves experts in the classroom? I suggest a day in the classroom for each person of the collaborative.

A few months ago when four so-called underperforming schools were announced in Worcester, Ms. Boone created four new administrative coordinators. A better solution would have been eight new teaching positions and/or classroom aides who are so needed in classrooms (administrator positions are probably twice the salary if not more of two teachers). This administration is top heavy with personnel. Perhaps that should be addressed as well as teaching to the MCAS.

Gary Rosen on City Assessor William Ford

Gary is right on with his assessment of Assessor William Ford. How he remains in this position is beyond my comprehension.  Their website has even changed making it more difficult for people to access than last year. Why?

To those people who commented before me, allow me to offer one suggestion: Start calling the talk shows about the councilors who last September were uncommitted to the lowest residential rate.

The Telegram printed an article about how the council is business friendly now.  Worcester Citizens for Business did a great job at lobbying these councilors. However, to shift more of the tax base to the residential property owners will not help businesses but hurt them since people will have less expendable income. Check out their website.  They list businesses that have left the city in the last ten years and imply it is due to the dual tax rate.

Call or email those councilors who voted to lower the commercial rate by shifting the tax burden to the residential property owners.

Medicare for All Massachusetts Bill Panel 3/14/12

Skyrocketing health care costs are higher in Massachusetts than any other state or country.  There’re hurting everyone including cities, and towns that have had to cut positions.

Everyone is experiencing this with high co-payments, and high deductibles.  Many people with insurance aren’t going to their doctor because of these higher deductibles and overall costs.

Senator Jaime Eldridge, and Representative Jason Lewis will discuss their bill introduced in the Massachusetts State Legislature, which is a ‘single payer system’ (Medicare is a single payer system).

If you’re a Worcester city employee or non-Medicare retiree, the city of Worcester is a single payer.

The panelists will discuss the impact of rising health care costs, and how the bill will have an affect on you and how much money your spend on healthcare.
